Comparing a newborn session with a family session

I have been asked a couple of times about the difference between a newborn session and a family session, so I will share that information here since I'm sure others have likely thought of the same question.

What is a newborn session?

Newborn sessions place focus on capturing moments of you welcoming your baby into your family. I will capture parents and baby, siblings and baby, baby in nursery, baby's first portraits (for announcement cards!), family photo, etc. Newborn sessions are also done in-home where you will likely be most comfortable.

When do newborn sessions take place?

Newborn sessions typically take place between the first two weeks, but it can also take place anytime up to 2 months of age. So don't be too worried if you've missed that early window! You've been planning for your baby's arrival and once baby arrives you're focusing on bonding, adjusting, and healing. Be gentle on yourself! If your baby is older than 2 months, I would recommend a family session.

What is a family session and how will I know if I need to do a family session instead?

If your baby is 2 months or older I would recommend a family session, which usually takes place outdoors/on-location. During this session I will focus on the family as a unit, instead of placing focus on baby. There will be lots of family photos, sibling photos, photos of each caregiver with baby, etc. Baby will likely be more alert, and you will probably be more comfortable taking baby outdoors.
